Technically I started making this quilt when I started on the fam’s quilts…last spring.
I just finished it a couple weeks ago.
But to be fair, I have definitely not been steadily working on it. In fact the butterfly squares sat antennae-less in a drawer for many months completely untouched (but not forgotten), just waiting for me to pull them out again.

Although this quilt took the longest to finish (I didn’t have the pressure of a deadline), I had the idea that I wanted to create this one well before I ever decided to make the other four for Christmas (which I posted photos of in this post!).
It was pretty soon after I discovered the art of FPP that I found these gorgeous butterfly patterns in ClaudiasHandwerkelei‘s Etsy shop and I knew that I wanted to put them all together into something special.

Claudia creates gorgeous FPP patterns, and I haven’t been disappointed by anything that I’ve purchased from her!
Surprisingly, the butterflies may have been the part of this quilt that took the least amount of time to complete.
The hand-stitching around each square was much more tedious, less satisfying, and definitely resulted in a few stabbed fingertips (I sat down and watched the Super Bowl while attempting to finish this quilt, go sports 🏈).

Although many of my projects are funded by thrifted material, this, for the most part, was not one of them. Unfortunately. I did use a thrifted fleece blanket as the back of the quilt (I was able to use the other half of it for Riley Mae’s bird-themed quilt), but other than that, I kinda had to expand my fabric selection for this project to semi-accurately portray the butterflies.
Obviously to match my room’s aesthetic I used white for the majority of it, which is certainly visually pleasing, but physically very scary to actually use.

Will I ever actually use this quilt? is the question that everyone should be asking here. It may just sit on the end of bed for all eternity. Perhaps its job is to simply look pretty forever, and not to actually provide warmth or comfort.
A true labor of love on my part, it also satisfies my fairly-new weird obsession with bug-related accessories.
In all seriousness though, it is rather nice to have one of my half-finished projects completed, especially since a few new ones have already taken its place.
C‘est la vie 🧵
